Beatrice is a teenager that belongs in the Abnegation faction in Chicago. Her family expects her to continue in this faction but she ends up choosing the Dauntless faction while her brother Caleb chooses the Erudite Faction. When she follows the Dauntless, she is afraid that she made the wrong choice, after all, growing up in Abnegation, defiance and selfishness were not part of her family's lifestyle and she fears that she might not survive.
Beatrice changes her name to Tris, to avoid being teased and after a few tests, she knows that she can manipulate the tests given to her by the Dauntless leaders. She learns that the "divergent" are different and will be killed when discovered so she tries to hide her true identity after a conversation with her mother.
During her training, Tris falls in love with her instructor, meanwhile, the Erudite's leader is trying to convert the Dauntless into fearless warriors by giving them a special injection to control and manipulate their actions. Tris then has to fight her love and save her family from the Erudite's domination.
